We hear it over and over again in the digital marketing world that having an engaging and relevant social media presence is key to growing your online authority. This is something that we have written extensively about on our blog, discussing how to grow your Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook following. Now it is time to revisit the topic of social media in more detail as the platforms continue to grow and evolve, delving into it on a deeper level to help you grow your online presence.

Instagram

In our previous blog post, we spoke about the importance of using relevant hashtags, keeping up to date with current affairs, running contests, and promoting your account on other social media platforms. These are all still important aspects of boosting your Instagram following, however, there are a multitude of other elements that you should take into consideration as you build your brand.

When starting up your Instagram account, you need to have a key theme that you stick to throughout your posts. For example, here at Active Internet Marketing, we use our Instagram account to show our followers what goes on behind the scenes: the faces behind our brand. We post about team birthdays, what we get up to on a day-to-day basis, where we go for meetings, even when the ice cream van comes to the office. This is our way of showing the world that although we are professionals, we are also unique individuals who have our own lives. Before you even begin posting, be sure that you know what your ‘stick’ is; understanding why you are doing something is key to carrying it out successfully.

When it comes to hashtags: use them. Finding the common terms that link to your post is a great starting point, however, if you want to get noticed you may need to think a little more outside the box. What makes your post unique? It is all very well tagging you post with generic hashtags, but how will this ensure that your photo of your dog dancing in a pink sparkly hat reaches those who live for canine related hilarity? To make sure that you don’t get lost in the crowd, try to create hashtags that are specific to your post, #DancingDog is more likely to boost your engagement than #dog. Our posts always include the hashtags #digitalmarketing , #officelife, and #SEO, but we make sure to balance that with post specific tags such as #icecream, #aliens, and #balloons.

Twitter

In our last blog post about gaining Twitter followers organically, we discussed initial ways to get your followers rising. These included following other users, engaging potential followers, targeting industry leaders, and tweeting during peak hours. However, there are even more options to consider if you are serious about boosting your Twitter following and engagement quickly.

Twitter lists – Twitter lists is a simple way to group together Twitter users who are all tweeting about a similar topic into one place. If you are unsure of how to add someone to a list, then take a look at this screenshot:

There are many reasons why Twitter lists are useful for encouraging your online growth. Firstly, they allow you to collate users of particular themes or from particular industries into one place. At Active Internet Marketing, we are constantly being added to other business’ digital marketing and SEO lists, and this creates a great resource for the owner as it means that they can scroll through their online marketing list and see what relevant people in the industry are tweeting (without gifs and funny videos getting in the way). Using lists to keep up to date makes it easier for you to respond to relevant tweets as quickly as possible, which will help you to increase your own engagement and start conversations between yourselves and other users in your industry.

Twitter chats – Joining in with relevant scheduled chats on Twitter is an excellent way to grow your following. You can find Twitter chats for any industry, from agriculture to marine biology, and they are scheduled at the same time each week with their own hashtags which means you never miss an opportunity to interact with people who work in your industry or share your interests. This is a great chance to network and is a sure-fire way to grow your audience. If you are a fellow marketer, take a look at these 25 marketing Twitter chats. We are sure that you’ll find one to take your fancy.

Facebook

When it comes to boosting the number of likes your company’s Facebook page has, our last blog post detailed the benefits of having a page for your business, but now we will go into how to go about increasing your presence. This section will detail to you how to increase your following on Facebook, as it is a fantastic platform to showcase your business on.

Everyone who has a Facebook business page has it for the same reason: to get more business. However, there are many steps you must go through before you reach that stage, and this means many different things to different businesses. Before you start trying to build your Facebook following, be sure you understand clearly what you want to achieve from it. Is it to gain more website enquiries? To get potential customers to call you? To push a specific product or promotion? Knowing what your business goal is will help to target the right audience, one that will respond in the way you want them to.

There are several ways that you can gain more likes for your page that will also benefit your customers. Consider making your Facebook page your out-of-hours point of contact, encouraging your customers to ask questions using Facebook Messenger, as this will get people liking your page and engaging on it as well.

Post valuable and searchable content, as this not only proves yourselves as an asset to your followers timelines’, but it also means that you are likely to receive more engagement. Don’t forget: just because your agenda is one thing, your followers will be following you for a whole host of different reasons. Therefore, it is important to make sure that your content is well thought out and valuable, appealing to a wide demographic as well as your target audience.
